Subject Information File relates to Mary McEllin's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) - increased from £60 on appeal - under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her son National Army Private 32122 Patrick McEllin. File also relates to Mary McEllin's further unsuccessful applications for an increased / additional award under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son. Private Patrick McEllin died on 24 November 1922 at Kilbride, Newport, County Mayo from the effects of wounds received during an engagement with IRA forces during the Civil War. See also 2D330 Michael Joseph Walsh, 2D331 Joseph Ruddy, 2D162 Austin Woods and Con.Ran.251 Patrick Murphy - all killed during the same incident. This engagement also led to the capture of IRA leader Michael Kilroy. Prior to joining the National Army in May 1922 Patrick McEllin had served with the IRA during the War of Independence.
