File relates to Sarah Woods' receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £50 (fifty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her nephew National Army Private 19911 Austin Woods.
Private Austin Woods was killed at Seaview, Newport, County Mayo on 24 November 1922 in fighting between National Army and IRA forces there during the Civil War. According to information on file the National Army lost a total of two officers and three men killed and three wounded in this engagement and it also resulted in the capture of senior IRA leader Michael Kilroy MSP34REF839. Austin Woods joined the National Army on 4 August 1922.
File includes: material relating to the payment of a dependents' allowance from Army funds in respect of Austin Woods and also of his brother John Woods who was also serving in the National Army for an unspecified period; signed typed report dated 22 May 1923 from Captain Micheál MacGhearailt, Adjutant 44 Infantry Battalion, Westport to the D. G., Claremorris Command regarding the date of and circumstances surrounding Private Austin Woods' death, the make up of the Woods family and their degree of dependency on Austin Woods at the time of his death; representations from Joseph MacBride TD on behalf of Sarah Woods; signed typed reports of 21 June 1923 and 21 January 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Gearóid O'Suilleavain to the Secretary, Minister for Defence and the Secretary, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Private Austin Woods' death; Garda Síochána reports dated 25 February and 9 June 1924 regarding the circumstances and means of the Woods family and their degree of dependency on Austin Woods at the time of the latter's death.
