Subject Information File relates to Thaddeus Walsh’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of his son Michael Joseph Walsh who was killed on 24 November 1922 near Newport, County Mayo. Also includes unsuccessful application from Sarah Walsh, sister for an award. Joseph Ruddy, 2D331; Austin Woods 2D162; McEllin, Patrick 2D166; Con.Ran.251 Patrick Murphy - all killed during the same incident. Letter to the Secretary, Department of Finance from Army Finance Officer states that Walsh was chief organiser of the Boy Scouts in Westport in 1914 and that he later held the rank of Lieutenant in the Irish Volunteers before going to Liverpool. He later returned to Mayo. Letter also refers to Walsh been interned in Frongoch in 1916. James Malone, in his response to the Military Service Registration Board, claims that Walsh was involved in the burning of warehouses in Liverpool and that upon his return to Ireland that he (Walsh) joined the West Mayo Active Service Unit (Flying Column). Similarly Patrick Duffy states that Walsh took part in engagements with British forces at [Skindargh] (Skerdagh/Skirdagh), burning of Drummen Barracks, Carrowkennedy ambush and patrols in Westport between April and July 1921.
