File relates to Margaret Sullivan's receipt of a dependents' allowance under the Army Pensions Act, 1953 in respect of her son National Army Sergeant Charles Sullivan. File also includes material relating to unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of Charles Sullivan from his father Patrick Sullivan and his brother William Sullivan as well as a rejected application under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 regarding Charles Sullivan also.
Sergeant Charles Sullivan died on 27 August 1922 from wound(s) received by him at Newport, County Mayo in fighting against IRA forces during the Civil War. Charles Sullivan previously served with the IRA from 1919 onwards having resigned from the RIC earlier that same year - exact dates of Charles Sullivan's RIC service not on file.
File includes: material signed and submitted by Margaret, Patrick and Charles Sullivan in support of their various applications; material relating to Garda Síochána and local social welfare officer investigations and reports into the circumstances and means of the Sullivan family and the degree of dependency of the various applicants on Charles Sullivan at the time of his death - partly closed; signed typed report of 3 October 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Major General Aodh MacNeill to the Department of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances of Sergeant Charles Sullivan' death and enclosing similar report from the Office of the General Officer Commanding, Western Command dated 26 September 1924; original signed handwritten and typed and copy typed correspondence and related documentation relating to representations on behalf of the applicants by various elected representatives and clergy of the Catholic Church; signed handwritten statements and letters relating to the verification of Charles Sullivan's pre-Truce IRA service and the non inclusion of Charles Sullivan in the membership rolls for the Binghamstown Company, IRA submitted to the Referee and Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 from Matthew Kilcawley, Patrick Keane, Michael Henry, Michael Lavelle and Owen Ginelly; and handwritten notes and typed summaries of sworn evidence given by [Michael] Lavelle and Patrick Keane on 23 November 1954 regarding the verification of Charles Sullivan's IRA service.
