Subject Information File relates to Joseph MacBride’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA for part or all of the periods between 1 April 1917 and 11 July 1921. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917. Joseph MacBride claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1914 and states that he was the principal Irish Volunteer and IRA officer in the County Mayo area until the subdivision of the County during the War of Independence. He claims to have mobilised the Irish Volunteers in the Westport area of County May at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising but that lack of arms prevented any activity on their part. He was subsequently arrested and interned by the British authorities from May to December 1916. From 1917 MacBride was principally involved in organisational work for the Irish volunteers in County Mayo. He was arrested and imprisoned between February and [July] 1917 and again between May 1918 and March 1919 – the latter in relation to the ‘German Plot’ arrests. Joseph MacBride was elected in the West Mayo constituency in the British general election of 1918, subsequently taking his seat in Dáil Éireann. Although he claims to have acted as the Brigade Officer Commanding for West Mayo Brigade IRA following the reorganisation of that body in the county, this is questioned by other references/witnesses on file. References state that from September 1920 he served as an organiser overseeing all of County Mayo retaining the rank of Brigadier – see evidence and statements from Michael Kilroy, Edward Moane and Richard Walsh. He was arrested again in late 1920 and interned until [December 1921]. File includes: handwritten standard form Referee R.15 showing details of subject’s rank as of 11 July 1921 and of holder of position of Brigade Officer Commanding West May Brigade IRA on that date from reco9rds supplied by E. Moane TD; typed transcript (5 pages) of sworn statement mad by Joseph Michael McBride (sic) before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 on 1 December 1936; signed handwritten letter in Irish from An Bráthair E.
