File relates to John Francis Hobbins' application for compensation as an ex-member of the Connaught Rangers who participated in the mutiny in India in 1920.
File contains material relating to the applicant's British Army Service and details of court martial findings. Applicant enlisted in May 1919and, in handwritten letters (dated 12 October 1934, 16 November 1936, 7 April 1946, 29 April 1946, 4 March 1948) he explains that he was a dispatch rider, on detachment in Kohat from Jullundur [Janlandhar] when he heard of the mutiny and explains his arrest in July 1920 as well as his financial circumstances. Despite being arrested, he was not court-martialed. He was discharged 'by purchase at his own request'. Claims he joined the 5 Battalion, East Clare Brigade and served until 1931.
As the claimant was never court-martialed, he was not deemed eligible under the terms of the Connaught Rangers (Pensions) Act, 1936.
