Subject Information File relates to John Francis Hobbins' application for compensation as an ex-member of the Connaught Rangers who participated in the mutiny in India in 1920. Applicant enlisted in May 1919and, in handwritten letters (dated 12 October 1934, 16 November 1936, 7 April 1946, 29 April 1946, 4 March 1948) he explains that he was a dispatch rider, on detachment in Kohat from Jullundur [Janlandhar] when he heard of the mutiny and explains his arrest in July 1920 as well as his financial circumstances. Despite being arrested, he was not court-martialed. He was discharged 'by purchase at his own request'. Claims he joined the 5 Battalion, East Clare Brigade and served until 1931. As the claimant was never court-martialed, he was not deemed eligible under the terms of the Connaught Rangers (Pensions) Act, 1936.
