Subject Information File relates to John Madden's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. Following the Easter Rising he was interned until December 1916. States he re-joined the Irish Volunteers upon reorganisation. Madden enlisted as a Second Lieutenant, Army Corps of Engineers in the National Army on 30 October 1922 at Portobello Barracks. Madden was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 January 1923 and Captain on 1 September 1934. Retired from the Defence Forces on health grounds on 22 April 1946. File contains; references from Seán Flood, [Liam MacNeill], Mark Wilson, Patrick Byrne and Henry Kenny; one page handwritten statement submitted by Madden in support of his application; copy of death certificate; copy probate of will; material relating to family partly closed.
