Subject Information File relates to Catherine Carney’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act 1934. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal, see file MD35108. Carney states she was not initially an official member of Cumann na mBan until 1922 owing to her age but states she was actively involved in service from 1920. Carney became a member of Tourmakeady Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo (Srah District) from 1922 up to the end of the Civil War in 1923. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) she states she helped provide food and beds for the Active Service Unit men after the Port Royal and Tourmakeady Ambushes and supplied information to the IRA. During the Truce period she states she partook in drilling and attended meetings. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Carney claims she carried dispatches, provided food and information to the IRA and attended the sick. File includes: letters of reference from Patrick Gibbons (20 October 1940); Liam Coinín (29 September 1940); Thomas Maguire DP54445 (19 December 1941); Michael Butler (19 December 1941); letter suggesting the poverty in applicants district (Srah) be taken into consideration (25 October 1941); summary of sworn evidence given before the Interviewing Officer by Catherine Carney (30 December 1941).
