Subject Information File relates to Maria O’Malley’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1918 and 30 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Maria O’Malley states that she was a member of the Islandeady Branch, [1 Battalion], West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan under the command of Miss AM Staunton. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July), she claims that she took part in dispatch work; first-aid training; intelligence work for IRA attack on British forces at Clookeen (06 May 1921); collecting clothes and food for IRA Active Service Unit; fundraising. She further states that her cousin Thomas O’Malley (1D278) was killed at an IRA ambush of British forces at Islandeady and that her brother John O’Malley, who was employed on the railway, kept arms and ammunition for the IRA. Applicant claims that she had to report to Michael Kilroy occasionally about this dump. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923), Maria O’Malley states that she took part in similar activity. File includes reference in support of the subjects’ claim from Tessie Moane O’Brien (14 November 1940) and a representation from Michael Moran TD (1953). Maria O’Malle did not appear before the Advisory Committee.
