Subject Information File relates to Ellen McLoughlin’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1918 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Ellen McLoughlin states that she was a member of Shramore Branch, [2 Battalion], 1 Brigade (West Mayo), Cumann na mBan under the command of Tom Cleary and Michael Kilroy. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921), the applicant claims that she did fundraising work; made haversacks and bandages for IRA forces and supplied food, socks and cigarettes to IRA members on the run. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923), the applicant states that she served under the command of Tom Cleary, Jack Connelly and Mrs O’Donnell and sent parcels to IRA prisoners. Ellen McLoughlin did not appear before the Advisory Committee and did not provide any references.
