Subject Information File relates to Katie Chambers’ unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. It is stated on file that Katie Chambers (née Kelly) was a qualified nurse and worked in Mayo County Infirmary for nine years. Subject claims that she joined the Tiernaur Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo in 1917 under the command of Michael McNamara and gave first-aid lessons to up to 30 women twice weekly and helped to organise concerts and plays to raise funds. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921), she claims that she was a member of Tiernaur Branch, 2 Battalion, 1 Brigade (West Mayo), Cumann na mBan under the command of John J Connolly and Laurence McGovern. States that she took part in storing arms for volunteers; supplying food and clothing to members of IRA Active Service Unit (ASU); house to house collection; making socks and clothing for IRA men on the run. Some of the men that she looked after in this period included Michael Brown for three weeks who had bronchitis and Vice Commandant Michael McMacnamon who had tuberculosis. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923), Katie Chambers states that she rendered first aid to wounded and sick IRA members including at a field hospital at Rosturk, County Mayo up until November 1922. Claims that she active until the end of 1923. File contains a statement and summary of evidence given before the Advisory Committee by the applicant on 11 March 1938. File includes handwritten references in support of the subject’s application from John Connolly (1938) and Annie Kilroy (1942) and handwritten notes from discussions regarding applicant’s service with Mrs Moane O’Brien and Miss Knight (17 May 1939).
