Subject Information File relates to Bridget O’Donnell’s unsuccessful military service pension application and her receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar in 1946. File also relates to Bridget O'Donnell's unsuccessful application for a special allowance under the Army Pensions Acts - application rejected as subject was not deemed to be incapable of self-support by reason of permanent infirmity. Bridget O’Donnell née Bridget Gibbons claimed for service with Ballinrobe Company, 2 Battalion, South Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 30 April 1916 and 30 September 1923. Subject and references claim that Bridget O’Donnell: carried despatches including before the Partry ambush in 1921; kept IRA members at her home; brought food and clothing to IRA members before the Toormakeady ambush in May 1921 and carried out a successful search for two missing members after the ambush. During the Civil War it is claimed that she: carried despatches; provided the use of her home for IRA members and kept a number of IRA members after an attack on National Army forces at Newport – date not on file. Material relating to subject's military service pension and Service (1917-1921) Medal applications includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Bridget O’Donnell in support of her application; signed handwritten statements regarding subject’s service from E Moane, James Flaherty, Michael Butler, Thomas Tuffy, John Duffy, Thomas Maguire and Tessie Moane O’Brian; typed summary (1 page) and transcript (4 pages) of sworn statement made by “Miss Bridget Gibbons” before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 on 22 July 1937; handwritten notes dated 1 February 1938, 17 May 1939 and 19 November 1940 relating to discussions held regarding subject’s service with “Messrs Kilroy [and] Moane” and “Mrs Moane O’Brien (sic) [and] Miss Knight”; representations on subject’s behalf from [Thomas Derrig T D], Minister for Education; copy typed medical certificate in respect of Bridget O’Donnell; and copy typed statement from Roger Gallagher, Valley House Hotel, Valley, Dugort, Achill, Mayo as to why he could no longer keep Bridget O’Donnell in his employment. Material relating to subject's application for a special allowance includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Bridget O'Donnell in support of her application; medical certificates, report and examination in respect of Bridget O'Donnell; and social welfare investigation and report as to subject's circumstances and means.
