Subject Information File relates to Michael McHale’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920 on his application form. Elsewhere on the file he also claimed to have served during the Civil War. During the War of Independence Michael McHale claimed to have: carried despatches; taken part in raids for arms; made buckshot; blocked roads; joined an Active Service Unit in May 1921 and mobilised for an aborted attack in Westport. Subject states that he had to leave the Active Service Unit due to ill health less than a fortnight after joining it. During the Civil War he claimed that he assisted in the guarding of prisoners in Rosmoney Coastguard Station. File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Michael McHale in support of his application; typed summary (1 page) and transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Michael McHale on 28 May 1937 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes dated 1 February 1938 and 19 November 1940 relating to discussions held with “Messrs Kilroy [and] Moane”; signed handwritten statements regarding subject’s service from Laurence McGovern, Edward Moane and Michael Gallagher; reference to subject’s civilian employment as a postman; and material relating to the settlement and closure of Michael McHale’s military service pension following his death on 24 April 1968.
