File dates 05 February 1924 - 09 January 1986
Subject Information File relates to Patrick O’Malley’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 during the War of Independence and Truce period. Patrick O’Malley was awarded 2 and 1/12 years service for pension purposes in 1946 at Grade E under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Subject unsuccessfully applied for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Patrick O’Malley states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in Newport, County Mayo in 1918. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921), the subject was attached to C Company (Newport), 2 Battalion, 1 Brigade (West Mayo), IRA under the command of William Burke. Claims that he took part in dispatch work; caring for arms; constructing dugouts; arms raids on private homes; collecting for the IRA arms fund; was appointed Section Leader (1920) and attempted to prevent individuals attending ‘British’ courts. Applicant was arrested by the authorities in January 1921 and held until March 1921. Upon his release, Patrick O’Malley went on the run and joined the Active Service Unit (ASU), 1 Brigade (West Mayo) under the command of J Doherty. Subject states that he lay in ambush at Lettermaghera and Islandeady Road and mentions an IRA Volunteer named “Mooney” who was shot dead accidentally [possibly James Duffy, 1D29, killed 07 April 1921). Further claims that he lay in ambush at Tourmakeady and took part in ambush of British forces at Newport. On 19 May 1921, the subject took part in an ambush of police and soldiers in British lorries at Kilmeena [County Mayo]. He claims that the engagement lasted for four hours and that he was wounded during the IRA’s retreat. Applicant received a broken leg and his comrades had “no way of taking [him] away”. Patrick O’Malley was captured and held in Westport [County Mayo], Castlebar [County Mayo], King George V Hospital [Dublin], Kilmainham [Dublin] and Arbour Hill [Dublin] until release in January 1922. From March 1922 until June 1922 during the Truce period, the subject received treatment in St Vincent’s Hospital [Dublin] (where his leg was broken and reset) and in a “nursing home” ran by Mrs Despard in Clonskeagh [Dublin]. Patrick O’Malley did not claim for Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923) service. Subject did not provide any references. File contains typed notes of evidence given by Mr Robinson, Mr Kilroy and Mr J McCoy (all 12 July 1946) in relation to Patrick O’Malley’s application. File 1P301 relates to Patrick O’Malley’s successful application for a Wound Pension under the Army Pensions Act. Also includes an application for a Service Medal. It is unclear if and when this medal was issued due to damaged application form. Subject served with the Newport Company, 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade under the command of William Burke (Company), Patrick J. Doherty (Battalion) and Michael Kilroy (Brigade). During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), Patrick O’Malley received a gunshot wound in his right leg. During the Truce period, he was held in King George Hospital, Parkgate Street, Dublin as a patient and prisoner. File includes: Award Certificates; Life Certificates; correspondence with JE Hanger & Co. Ltd. in regard to a “Hanger Metal Artificial Limb for Above Knee Amputation” which was attached in August 1954; correspondence with T. Barry & Sons, shoemakers who supplied surgical boots with rubber heels and correspondence with John Ryan, handcraft shoe maker and orthopaedic footwear specialist.
