Subject Information File relates to Annie Coyne unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1923. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in 1959, see file MD31534. Annie Coyne (née McGuire) states that she was active with the Aughagower Branch of Cumann na mBan attached to 3 Battalion (Westport), 1 Brigade (West Mayo) under the command of Miss Moane under the command of Giley Doogan. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the applicant claims that she was in engaged in sheltering IRA men on the run; fundraising and dispatch work. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Annie Coyne states that she took part in similar activity. File includes handwritten references in support of the applicant’s claim from Patrick Duffy (1940; 1955). Subject did not appear before the Advisory Committee. File DP30174 contains material and correspondence relating to Annie Coyne’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts. Allowance was awarded in 1963. File contains correspondence, memoranda, means assessments and signed handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1959-1974). Representations were made by Patrick Duffy (1960).
