Subject Information File relates to Teresa Swifte’s unsuccessful application for a Military Service Pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in October 1946. Teresa Swifte states that she joined the Westport Branch of Cumann na mBan which was attached to the 3 Battalion, 1 Brigade (West Mayo). Her father was a former member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and references on file state that she was able to procure information from him that was useful to the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The subject owned a tobacco shop in Shop Street, Westport, County Mayo and this became a dispatch clearing centre. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) under the command of Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839) and Mrs. O’Brien (MSP34REF29926), Teresa Swifte claims that she took part in first aid training; procured 300 rounds of .303 ammunition from British forces; procured two revolvers and procured 400 rounds of ammunition which were all passed onto IRA forces. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the subject states that she continued to be active with dispatch work and also procured two rifles and 300 rounds of ammunition. Teresa Swifte claims that she was active until 1925. File includes handwritten references in support of the applicant’s claim from Mrs. E. Moane (1940); Sean Gibbons (Undated); Liam J. Malone (1940); Dan Sammin (1942); Charles Barrett (1942); E. Moane (1945); Patrick Duffy (1945) and M. Gallagher (1945). File contains a summary of sworn evidence made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 17 December 1940.
