Subject Information File relates to Annie Mary Staunton’s unsuccessful application for a Military Service Pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in October 1946, information held on file. Annie Mary Staunton states that her sister Lizzie Staunton was active with Cumann na mBan and her brother Patrick Staunton was a member of the IRA in Castlebar, County Mayo. Subject claims that she helped organise Cumann na mBan in 1915 and attended the organisation’s second annual convention in Dublin in that year. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), Annie Mary Staunton states that she took part in: first aid training; catering for IRA men on the run in an Active Service Unit (ASU) under the command of James Chambers (MSP34REF2993) and procuring medical aid for wounded IRA members. Annie Mary Staunton did not claim for Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) service. File includes some original documentation including a copy of a report from an Cumann na mBan convention (31 October 1915); a receipt for Miss Staunton, Castlebar Branch from Máire Ní Ragallaigh (5 August 1921); a receipt from Twigg’s family grocery, Castlebar for 4lbs of nuts which was paid for by Lizzie Staunton (27 October 1921) and a receipt from T. Lavelle & Co., Castlebar for 300 cigarettes paid by Miss Staunton (28 October 1921). File includes handwritten and typed references in support of the subject’s claim from Lil M. O’Brennan (1937); James Chambers (1937-46); Nora Daly (1937) and Michael Kilroy (1946). File contains a summary of sworn evidence made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 23 July 1937. Representations were made by Michael Moran TD (1946). File DP16253 relates to subject’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Act. File includes representations by Michael Moran TD (1947); copy of subject’s birth certificate (1875) and signed handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1947-48).
