Subject Information File relates to William Egan’s unsuccessful application for a Military Service Pension under the Military Service Pensions Acts, 1924 and 1934. Subject was in receipt of a Service (1917-1921) Medal, see file MD33871. The Board of Assessors recognised service between 12 July 1921 and 31 March 1923, see MSP2 file. William Egan states that he was attached to the Irish Volunteers in Cork in 1916 under the command of Bernard Walsh (Bertie Walsh). In the 1917-18 period, he claims that he was a member of L Company, 4 Battalion, 1 Cork Brigade under the command of Patrick Higgins. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), William Egan states that he served as Company Police Officer, E Company, 4 Battalion, 1 Cork Brigade, Irish Republican Army (IRA) under the command of Patrick Higgins. He claims that he took part in arms-raids; cutting wires; felling trees; digging trenches; mail raids and arresting suspected spies in Middleton. During the Truce period, the applicant states that he was appointed Battalion Police Officer, 4 Battalion, 1 Cork Brigade, IRA. William Egan enlisted with the National Army at Beggar’s Bush Barracks, Dublin on 23 March 1922. He served with A Company, 10 Battalion, 1 Cork Brigade under the command of Michael Hegarty. Taking the pro-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the applicant claims that he took part in a number of engagements. William Egan was discharged on 11 October 1922 to join An Garda Síochána (Garda Number 1883). He retired from the force on 2 May 1955. File includes hand-written reference in support of the subject’s claim from Patrick Joseph O’Higgins (1925). File also includes copies of letters of recommendation (1922).
