Subject Information File relates to Patrick Duffy’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1919. Patrick Duffy states that he joined Na Fianna Éireann in Westport, County Mayo in 1916 under the command of Thomas Derrig (MSP34REF8768) and Thomas Ketterick. On Sunday 29 April 1916, the subject claims that he was mobilised at Farnaght/Farnaught, Westport but had no fight during Easter Week. Transferred to H Company (Aughagower), Westport Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Irish Volunteers under the command of John Duffy, the subject states that he was engaged in drills; parades; fundraising for Irish republican prisoners during the 1917-18 period. Attached to H Company (Aughagower), 3 Battalion (Westport), 1 Brigade (West Mayo) IRA under the command of John Duffy and Joseph Ring (Battalion Commandant), it is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids; manufacture of explosives; burning of evacuated Carrowkennedy police hut and received a gunshot wound in his palm from unknown persons during guard duty (December 1920). Patrick Duffy joined the Active Service Unit (ASU), West Mayo Brigade under the command of Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839) and took part in an attack on police at Clogher (April 1921) and Kilmeena (May 1921); held up a train outside Westport in search of Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) men (May 1921); the Carrowkennedy ambush (June 1921); the burning of Drummin Barracks (June 1921) and mail raids. During the Truce period, the subject states that he was still attached to the West Mayo Brigade ASU under the command of Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839) and Edward Moane (MSP34REF50). Patrick Duffy claims that he attended IRA training camps and was appointed Brigade Quartermaster, West Mayo Brigade IRA. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923); the subject claims that he served under the command of Michael Kilroy and took part in the defence of Collooney, County Sligo and Gurteen, County Sligo; the capture of Ballina, County Mayo; Newport, County Mayo; Clifden, County Galway; attacks on Westport, and Castlebar and preventing the capture of the ASU at Mountbrown, Westport, County Mayo. Patrick Duffy was captured by National Forces at Islandleady [County Mayo] in December 1922. He escaped from custody on 4 March 1923 and re-joined his unit. Subject claims that was appointed Commander of the ASU, was active until the ceasefire order (May 1923) and was on the run until December 1924 when he returned home. File contains a sworn statement made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 28 June 1935 and a statement by Edward Moane TD on 17 July 1935.
