File relates to Martin Ludden’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1920. File also contains material relating to Martin Ludden’s successful application for a Service Medal (1917-21) without Bar which was issued in April 1950.
The subject states that left Ireland in March 1919 and moved to Widnes, Lancashire, England where he joined the Widnes Company, No. 1 Area, IRA in June 1919 under the command of Jack O’Keeffe. Claims that he took part in the procuring of arms and acquiring explosives in the copper works in which he worked.
In September 1920, Martin Ludden states that he moved to Rochdale and joined the No. 3 Company (Rochdale), Manchester Battalion, No. 2 Area, under the command of Frank Heeran and James J. Walsh. Claims that he held the rank of Section Commander, Second Lieutenant and First Lieutenant. Applicant claims he worked as a moulder at Tweedales & Smalley’s, Castleton, [Rochdale].
It is stated that the applicant took part in IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: the burning of farms; the burning of a cotton mill between Castleton and Manchester with James J. Walsh, Frank Heeran, Deasy and Miss O’Donnell (MSP34REF22112) from Clare (December 1920); the burning of a cotton mill between Rochdale and Oldham (January 1921); the seizure of 25 rifles belonging to Catholic Boy Scouts from St. Patrick’s, Rochdale (January 1921) and the purchase of guns from several Irish ex. British Army soldiers in Wallasey.
During the Truce period, Martin Ludden was assigned to watch the movements of the hangman Ellis in Rochdale.
Fearing arrest, the subject moved to County Durham in October 1921 where he took part in raids for explosives in collieries in Wheatley Hill; Wingate and Thornley.
Martin Ludden states that he moved to Dublin in July 1922 and enlisted with the An Garda Síochána on 3 January 1923.
File includes hand-written and typed reference in support of the subject’s claim from F. Heeran (1922); James J. Walsh (1922) and RJ Purcell (Undated). File also contains a typed sworn statement and summary made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 4 July 1941.
