Subject Information |
File relates to Rose Loftus’ receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923, during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
Rose Loftus joined Cumann na mBan in 1918 and was active in County Mayo during the War of Independence carrying out the usual activities such as collecting funds. She states that her home was a dispatch centre and that she frequently delivered dispatches. Men on the run would stay at the house and she would provide food and do scout duty for them. Loftus claims gelignite and fuse were stored at the house and that men manufactured explosives at the house prior to an ambush at Tourmakeady (no date given). She continued with the usual activities in the Truce period.
Loftus carried out similar work during the Civil War and states that bombs were stored at her home. She claims there were three dug-outs in her home, one under a bed, one in the stable and one in the garden and that Column men [Active Service Unit] would stay there regularly. The subject’s sister Mary Mulchrone was involved in similar activities (see file MSP34REF48010). A Service (1917-1921) Medal with bar was issued to Rose Loftus on 13 June 1960 (see file MD27943).
