Subject Information
File relates to Mary Mulchrone’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 – 30 September 1923, during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Mulchrone also claimed unsuccessfully for the periods between 23 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. Mary Mulchrone joined Cumann na mBan in 1918 and during the War of Independence carried out the usual activities such as collecting funds, attending meetings, catering and carrying dispatches. She states that her house was frequently used and that the Column [Active Service Unit] made bombs there (no date given). Mulchrone also says that she moved revolvers and ammunition (no date given). In the Truce period the subject took part in fund raising activities and aided men who were occupying Trean Beg Lodge (no details given). Mulchrone’s activities continued during the Civil War and three dug-outs were located at her home. After the ‘cease fire’ she collected funds and sent parcels to prisoners. File contains material relating to Mary Mulcrone’s application for a Military Services Pension including; handwritten reference from John Connolly (2 November 1937); typed references from Michael Kilroy (8 March 1938), P.J. McDonnell (18 November 1940) and Doctor J.A. Madden (14 January 1941); typed statement of activities signed by Annie Kilroy (undated); representation from Michael Horan TD (27 July 1939); Summary of Sworn Evidence given before Interviewing Officers by Mary Mulchrone on 17 December 1940 and Advisory Committee notes for discussion with Kilroy, Moane and McGovern (23 January 1941) and Mrs. Kilroy (16 December 1941). Also material relating to the closure of Mulchrone's pension account on her death. Some material closed for Data Protection reasons.
