File relates to Patrick Coughlan’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 23 April 1916 and 31 March 1920.
During Easter Week 1916, the applicant states that he was attached to the Westport Company, Irish Volunteers and was mobilised at Farnaught, County Mayo but saw no action. In late 1915, Patrick Coughlan claims that he was involved in the raid of a British Army soldier’s home.
Attached to B Company (Ballyglass), 3 Battalion, South Mayo Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity in County Mayo during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: arms-raids; the making of munitions; an ambush of Crown Forces at Port Royal at which one British Army soldier died (7 March 1921); the burning of Ballyglass RIC Barracks; raiding Mayo Abbey Post Office and Clogher Post Office and guarding Brigade O/C Thomas Maguire (DP54445) who was wounded.
Patrick Coughlan had no Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) service.
Material on file shows that Patrick Coughlan married Mary-Julia Coughlan (née Hughes) on 5 January 1928. The applicant died on 5 January 1946, his widow Mary-Julia died on 4 April 1991.
File includes signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Thomas Maguire (1933). File further contains a typed summary and sworn statement made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 18 May 1937.
