Subject Information |
File relates to Bridget Buckley’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan which, following an appeal in 1942, was successful for the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Her first application was refused and she also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923.
Bridget Buckley states she joined the Midleton branch of Cumann na mBan in 1917, her sister Mary (now Mrs Murphy) was Captain, another sister was also a member and her brother was in the Irish Volunteers. Applicant states she was engaged in routine activities including attending parades, drilling, collecting funds, organising dances and attending First Aid lectures.
Throughout the War of Independence Buckley states she continued these activities. In addition 15 to 20 rifles captured at Castlemartyr Barracks on 9 February 1920 were stored in a dump on the farm which also held ammunition until the Truce. Along with her siblings, applicant states she kept these clean, and claims she conveyed arms prior to and following the Ballycotton Barracks attack [August 1920?], the attack on a military lorry at Churchtown [26 August 1920] and the Mile-Bush attack [28 December 1920]. She claims she catered and did laundry for IRA men on the run who called, she carried dispatches and she attended the wounds of Jack Aherne and Dermot Hurley. It appears spies were kept imprisoned in an outhouse and on one occasion applicant alleges she saw one escape, gave warning, chased after him and assisted in his recapture.
In the Truce period applicant had routine service.
During the Civil War Period, applicant states she accommodated five or six men for a few days, the house was raided a week later, and the branch broke up at this time. She states men continued to call for about two months following the branch breakup., after which she had no activity.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Bridget Buckley in support of her application; handwritten notes relating to discussions held with M[artin] Corry, M Leahy, Miss Nita Murphy and other unidentified verifying officers regarding claimant's service and activities (23 July 1941 - 19 May 1942); handwritten and typed statements regarding claimant’s service activities from Michael Kearney, Matt Ó Tuama, M Leahy, Martin Corry, TD (21 May-20 June 1940); typed transcript of sworn evidence given by claimant before Referee and Advisory Committee on 21 May 1940 and summary of same and material relating to the settlement and closure of claimant's service pension following her death on 23 September 1976 - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
DP18343 file relates to Buckley’s unsuccessful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts 1943/1946. Buckley’s claim was rejected on the grounds that she was not found incapable of self-support by reason of permanent infirmity.
