Subject Information |
File relates to Rosie Cunningham’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1920.
Rosie Cunningham (née Malone) had at least two siblings active in the Republican Movement – Captain J. Malone, ex Commandant 3 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, IRA and one unnamed sister who was a member of Cumann na mBan.
Attached to the Westport Branch, 3 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan, it is stated that the applicant took part in general Cumann na mBan activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: dispatch work mainly for IRA Volunteers [Edward] Moane (MSP34REF50) who lived in Carrabawn outside Westport and Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839) in Newport; organising fund-raising dances for the IRA; transporting arms; delivering dispatches to O’Donnell in “the Fire Station in Dublin”; attending to wounded IRA Volunteers such as Naughton for six months who had his “hand shot off” and O’Callaghan of Newport for three weeks who was wounded in the leg.
Applicant states that her home was raided weekly by Crown Forces and in one instance herself and her brother was beaten by the ‘Black and Tans’ (RIC).
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), the applicant states that continued with similar activity. Further claims that she attended wounded IRA men after the Aghagower ambush (no date)and was once taken out of her home by National Army troops and threatened to be shot.
File includes signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Charles Gavan (1940); Tessie Ó Briain (Teresa O’Brien) (1940); Captain J. Malone (1940). Material relating to family closed.
