Subject Information |
File relates to Annie McNicholas' successful pension application in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan for parts and entire periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923. She was awarded 3 and 5/36 years of active service for pension purposes in September 1942.
Applicant claims the rank of Secretary of the Balla branch (Mayo) of Cumann na mBan until September 1920 when she claims she had to go 'on the run'. She states her house was used regularly for meetings by Volunteers and was a covering address for dispatches from GHQ. She kept bombs, revolvers and ammunition in her house.
She was then forced to go on the run and came to Dublin. She claims she was sent to Milltown to take charge of a cottage used to keep wounded men for about six weeks. She carried dispatches to and from Dublin and later was a full time organiser of the Belfast boycott. She states she was in touch with the IRA for the whole time. She was in Balla when the Civil War broke out. She continued her dispatch work. Later, she was also involved with the Prisoners' Dependents' Fund, working as Secretary.
File contains material relating to the claimant's application (correspondence, forms..), contemporary material in relation to the Belfast Trade Boycott, providing evidence of the applicant's involvement (1921-1922) (including copy letter of dismissal from Michael Staines to McNicholas, following the announcement that the boycott committee was to be dissolved); letter of representation from Richard Walsh, TD; handwritten statement by applicant (December 1935); typed summary of evidence and typed sworn statement made before Advisory Committee on 19 November 1938; typed, handwritten and typed copies of reference letters from T.O'Deirg [O'Derrig], Peter Hunt, David R Rochford, Richard Walsh, Máire Comerford, Lily O'Brennan .
