Subject Information File relates to Brigid Lyons's receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 11 July 1921 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. File also contains submissions in support of subject's claims from, among others Major General Sean McKeon, Diarmuid Hegarty, George Nicholls and Eamon Duggan. File also contains letters written from Dr Rollier's Clinic in Switzerland, where subject was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis and refers to subject's uncle. Her pension application (in MSP34REF3615) shows her involvement in Easter Week 1916 and indicates the date of her enlistment (13 November 1922) in the National Forces with the rank of Lieutenant Medical Officer (equivalent to a rank of Commandant), after having completed her medical studies. The file also contains particulars regarding her activity from 1916. She claims having joined Cumann na mBan in 1915 at University College Galway and spent Easter Week in the Four Courts where she got arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham until 10 May 1916. She continued to assist in the formation of Cumann na mBan branches in Galway, gave first aid lectures and from 1917, worked in South Longford and Clare (elections). She continued to carry dispatches, collect funds and she purchased arms and ammunition in Dublin (period from April 1920 to March 1921). Lyons was demobilised from the Army Medical Services on 31 January 1924. It is noted in a minute sheet (contained in the payment file 24C129), signed by the Army Finance Officer and dated 13 November 1926, that despite the Board of Assessors having certified the applicant's had 8.264 years pensionable service with the rank of Commandant, no certificate would be issued. The case of Margaret Skinnider is quoted as reference. The Minister ordered the issue of the certificate (signed the verso of the minute sheet, dated [23] November 1926). The same file also contains the applicant's life certificates and correspondence between herself and the Army Pensions Branch. ARCHIVIST'S NOTE: The applicant's cousins Brighid (MSP34REF13034), Margaret/Peg (MSP34REF16157) and Maureen (MSP34REF13035) McGuinness were all active in Cumann na mBan in Longford Town. Her uncle Joseph McGuinness (MD742), his wife Kathleen Farrell and another uncle Frank McGuinness were also all part of the Four Courts garrison in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.
