Subject Information |
File relates to Bridget Barrett’s unsuccessful applications under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of her son Na Fianna Éireann member William Barrett. Bridget Barrett was deemed not to have been dependent on her son at the time of his death.
It is stated that William Barrett died on 24 March 1923 during the Civil War at Castlebar Hospital, County Mayo, after being knocked down by a lorry driven by members of the National Army when returning to Castlebar from delivering a despatch to Glenisland. According to material on file William Barrett served with Na Fianna Éireann from 1920 onwards and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Bridget Barrett in support of her applications; representations on behalf of Bridget Barrett from Edward Moane TD, Richard Walsh TD, P. J. Ruttledge TD, Minister for Justice, Jack Leonard and Aodh de Blacam (Roddy the Rover of the Irish Press newspaper); reference to Bridget Barrett’s receipt of an ex-gratia payment of £100 (one hundred pounds sterling) from the Department of Defence in respect of the death of her son in August 1924; material relating to Customs and Excise investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Barrett family and the degree of dependency of Bridget Barrett on her son at the time of his death; and signed handwritten statement regarding William Barrett’s service and death from James Chambers.
