File relates to unsuccessful applications made under the Army Pensions Acts between 1933 and 1960 in respect of IRA Captain Thomas Joseph Prendergast by his father Michael Prendergast, his mother Kate Prendergast and his sister Tessie Prendergast. None of the various applicants were judged to have been dependent on Thomas Joseph Prendergast at the time of his death.
Thomas Joseph Prendergast was killed on 3 July 1922 during the Civil War when the vehicle he was travelling struck a felled tree on the road. The location is referred to as Blindwell, County Galway and Foxhall, County Galway on file. It is stated on the file that Prendergast was returning from IRA operations at Mountbellew, County Galway when the accident occurred. According to references and material on file Thomas Joseph Prendergast had served with the IRA from 1920 onwards and during the War of Independence and Civil War. Michael Prendergast states that his son had been interned by British forces at the Curragh for about six months during the War of Independence - exact dates of this internment not on file.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Michael Prendergast, Kate Prendergast and Tessie Prendergast in support of their respective applications; representations on behalf of the various applicants from Gerald Bartley TD and R. Prendergast (brother of Tessie Prendergast); original signed and initialled handwritten and typed and copy typed documentation relating to Social Welfare and Department of Defence investigations as to the circumstances and means of the Prendergast family and the degree of dependency of Tessie Prendergast on her brother at the time of his death; and signed handwritten statements regarding Thomas Joseph Prendergast's service and death from Gerald Bartley TD, Michael Kilroy TD, Patrick Kelly, Martin Kelly, Edward Moane and John Gibbons.
