File relates to Patrick McNulty Senior's receipt of a partial dependents' gratuity of £75 (seventy five pounds sterling) in 1938 under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of his son IRA Private Patrick McNulty.
Patrick McNulty Junior died on 26 December 1923 from tuberculosis and the effects of wounds received by him in an accidental explosion in [August] 1922 during the Civil War. According to references on file a Mills bomb, among some munitions McNulty was moving, accidentally exploded. References state that Patrick McNulty had served with the IRA from 1919 until his wounding. References state that following his wounding, Patrick McNulty had to be moved around and stayed in poor conditions without adequate medical treatment in order to avoid capture and arrest by the National Army.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Patrick McNulty in support of his application; medical certificates relating to Patrick McNulty Junior's wounds, illness and death; representations on behalf of Patrick McNulty Senior from Michael Kilroy TD and Sean Moran; original signed handwritten reports from the Investigating Officer, Customs and Excise, Mulranny, County Mayo regarding the circumstances and means of the McNulty family and the degree of dependency of Patrick McNulty Senior on his son at the time of the latter's death; signed handwritten statements regarding Patrick McNulty Junior's service and the circumstances surrounding his wounding from Michael Kilroy, Lawrence McGovern and Pat Lavelle.
