Subject Information File relates to John Byrne's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Citizen Army prior to and during the week of 23 to 29 April 1916, his subsequent internment until October of that year and his service between April 1920 and March and 1921 during the War of Independence with the same organisation. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service from 1917 to March 1920 and from April 1921 to the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1922. He further claimed to have served as Adjutant of the Irish Citizen Army from January 1920 to 1922 and also to have assisted John Hanratty, Quartermaster General of the Irish Citizen Army in his work. During the first week of fighting in the Civil War, the subject states that he was engaged in the occupation of 35 Parnell Square (headquarters of the Irish Transport & General Workers' Union ITGWU) under the command of PH Holahan but had no actual engagements with National forces. He says that five men took part in occupation of 35 Parnell Square, he says that they had "disagreements" with the courtmartial of commandant James O'Neill. He took no further part after July 1922. File includes: original and copies of signed typed letter (14 January 1922) from Sean MacMahon, Quartermaster General, Árd Oífig, Áth Cliath, Óglaigh na h-Éireann (General Headquarters, IRA Dublin, IRA) to the Adjutant, Irish Citizen Army enclosing typed signed statements from MacMahon and James Fitzgerald regarding the purchasing from, and payment to, Seamus O' Neill, Officer Commanding, Irish Citizen Army (MSP34REF8368), of a listed quantity of arms and ammunition in February 1921 - sworn statement of subject and John Hanratty both include reference to this incident and later courtmartial of O' Neill; signed statements regarding cliamant from James O' Shea, Michael Donnelly, Michael O' Kelly and Ellett Elmes; typed transcript of sworn evidence given by subject (21 September 1936) and John Hanratty (22 October 1936) before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; and reference to subject's wife, son and two daughters - partly closed.
