Subject Information |
File relates to William O'Malley's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1917 to 31 March 1919 and 1 April 1920 to 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in other periods.
Applicant claims he initially served with Brockagh Company organising companies in the Brigade area. He states he was arrested for illegal drilling 16 March 1918 and sentenced to six (6) months served in Belfast Jail and Dundalk. Applicant went to Liverpool (11 April 1919) to work on the docks and served in the IRA there, taking part in the burning of Liverpool docks [November 1920]. He returned to Ireland in December 1920 or January 1921 and was appointed Battalion Police Officer. He claims he served with the battalion active service unit (flying column) at an ambush at Skirdagh [March 1921]. Applicant also claims he arrested and detained suspected spies as part of his police work and did intelligence work.
During the Truce period applicant claims he did police work and served in Newport Barracks. During the Civil War applicant claims he served with Kilroy's column and took part in fighting against National Army forces at Newport, Castlebar, Westport, Trienbeg (dates not recorded). Applicant was captured at Skirdagh [8 March 1923] and interned in Hare Park Camp until 19 December 1923.
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by O'Malley in support of his application; signed handwritten letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from Seán Lynchehan and Patrick Fleming; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by M. Gallagher, Adjutant 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade; typed transcript (7 pages) of sworn statement made by William O'Malley on 21 January 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statements made by William Joseph Malone and Michael Kilroy on behalf of O'Malley; material relating to subject's unsuccessful appeals to increase the grade of pension awarded to him from grade E to grade D; material relating to subject's receipt of public monies through his temporary employment with Mayo County Council in the 1930s; and material relating to subject's widow and surviving children - partly closed.
DP3292: file contains Special Allowance application dated 25 May 1967. It is noted that his application could not be considered as his yearly means exceeded the 'appropriate annual sum'.
