Subject Information |
File relates to Thomas Mahony's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920.
Applicant states that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and was appointed Battalion Intelligence Officer in April 1920 which required him to leave his employment to do intelligence work full-time. Mahony claims he had to organise the Battalion's Intelligence Department, appoint Company Intelligence Officers and protect the Battalion Flying Column (Active Service Unit). Operations Mahony states he provided information for included Garrymore ambush, where RIC District Inspector Potter was captured, and sniping operations on Ballyporeen Barracks and Ardfinnan (dates not recorded). Applicant also claims he served as Acting Battalion Adjutant for three (3) months from December 1920 to March 1921.
During the Truce period applicant continued his intelligence work and occasionally went into Cahir Barracks. Mahony states that he was arrested in August 1922 and interned in Kilkenny. He was released in December 1923.
Material relating to subject's military service pension include: handwritten material signed and submitted by Mahony in support of his application; signed letters and statements regarding subject's service and activities from T. Ryan, Dan Breen, Seán Fitzpatrick, J. O'Brien, Seán Prendergast and Seán Hogan; standard form Referee R.15 showing details of claimant's rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from information provided by Seán Fitzpatrick, OC 6 Battalion; typed transcript (4 pages) of sworn statement made by Thomas Mahony on 29 January 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; similar sworn statement made by Senator Quirke and Seán Fitzpatrick on behalf of Mahony; material relating to subject's unsuccessful application to improve the rank at which his pension was awarded; and material relating to settlement of subject's pension account following his death - partly closed.
