Subject Information File relates to Sean MacMahon's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Army from 1 April 1916 to 30 September 1923, through the Easter Rising, War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Sean MacMahon served as a Company Officer Commanding, Battalion Vice Commandant, Irish Volunteers and IRA and Quartermaster General of the IRA from August 1920. Subject became Quartermaster General of the National Army (at the rank of Lieutenant General) on its formation in February 1922 becoming Chief of Staff on 23 August 1922 and serving in the Defence Forces at that position until March 1924. On 20 March 1924 MacMahon's commission was withdrawn by Order of the Executive Council and he was reappointed with the rank of Major General on 22 April 1924. Claimant served as General Officer Commanding Southern Command from October 1925 until tendering his resignation from the Defence Forces due to ill health from 24 January 1927. Subject had been on extended periods of leave from his post from 1 March 1926 when he had been admitted to hospital. File contains: signed statements regarding claimant's service from Sean Guifoyle, C. Carberry and Sean Cullen; material relating to subject's record of service with the National Army and Defence Forces; and typed signed letter (7 June 1927) from the Secretary, Department of Defence on behalf of the Minister for Defence to the Army Finance Officer regarding the payment of pension to the claimant. File further contains material relating to subject's successful Disability Pension claim relating to injuries received when thrown from a car in December 1923. This includes: medical reports and results of medical examinations; signed typed statements regarding the circumstances surrounding Sean MacMahon's injury and his service from Richard O' Hegarty, Peadar MacMathghmhna and Major General Michael Brennan; and material relating to subject's wife and son.
