File relates to Thomas Basquil's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA during the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923.
Thomas Basquil; claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1917. During the War of Independence Basquil states that he took part in raids for arms and enforcing boycotts of the RIC and British courts. He also claims that he took part in IRA attacks on British forces at Clogher Cross, Kilmeena and Carrowkennedy - dates not on file - as well as mobilising for other attacks/ambushes which did not materialise. During the Truce period he claims that as well as taking part in training camps that he undertook police and organisational work for the IRA. He states that during 1922 he joined the newly formed Garda Siochana for a period to gather information for the anti-Treaty IRA. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 he undertook intelligence work for the IRA in County Mayo. He was not arrested or interned and states that he emigrated to the United States of America in 1924.
