File relates to Elsie Geraghty’s receipt of a dependents’ gratuity of £150 (one hundred and fifty pounds sterling) under the Army Pensions Act, 1923 in respect of her brother National Army Brigadier General Michael Joseph Ring. File also relates to the posthumous award of a Service (1917-1921) Medal with Bar in respect of Michael Joseph Ring to his sister Rena Cahill.
Michael Joseph Ring was killed in action on 14 September 1922 during fighting between National Army and IRA (Irregular) forces in the Ox Mountains area near Bonniconlon/Bunnyconnellan between Ballina and Tubbercurry on the border between counties Mayo and Sligo during the Civil War.
According to information on file Michael Joseph Ring joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 and mobilised but had no active service during the 1916 Easter Rising at which time he was serving as an Irish Volunteer Company Captain. From 1917 to the end of the War of Independence (11 July 1921), Michael Joseph Ring served as a Vice Battalion Officer Commanding and as Battalion Officer Commanding with the Irish Volunteers and IRA. He also served with the West Mayo Brigade Active Service Unit (Flying Column). According to reference from Michael Kilroy during the War of Independence Ring took part in a number of IRA operations and attacks on British forces at various locations including Westport and Carrowkennedy. According to information on file during the Truce period Michael Joseph Ring had served as IRA Liaison Officer for counties Galway and Mayo and then joined the Garda Síochána from that force’s inception in February 1922. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 29 June 1922 Ring joined the National Army and serving as a Brigadier General took part in fighting in County Mayo until his death.
File includes: signed typed standard report dated 28 January 1924 from Defence Forces Adjutant General Lieutenant General Gearóid ‘Suilleavain to the Ministry of Defence, Army Pensions Department regarding the date and circumstances surrounding the death of Brigadier General Ring; material relating to Garda Siochana investigations and reports regarding the circumstances and means of the Ring and Geraghty families and the degree of dependency of Elsie Geraghty on her brother at the time of his death; signed handwritten letter/statement from Michael Kilroy dated 21 August 1943 verifying Michael Joseph Ring’s pre-Truce Irish Volunteer and IRA service; original signed handwritten and copy typed correspondence (4 - 22 November 1965) between Henry Kenny TD and the Secretary, Department of Defence regarding a request from Henry Kenny for information regarding Michael Joseph Ring’s service; printed copies of entries from the 1901 and 1911 Irish census for the Ring family; photocopy of undated printed article entitled “Brigadier- General Joe Ring – ‘A brave soldier whose courage was never in doubt’” by Peadar O Flanagain published by the Westport Historical Society.
