File relates to Maria Keane's unsuccessful application for dependant's allowance or gratuity, under the Army Pensions Act 1923, in respect of her son, John Keane, who died on 19 January 1924, as a result of contracting pulmonary tuberculosis. Maria Keane made a subsequent unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Act 1927.
Applicant claimed that her son John Keane joined the IRA in 1918 and served up until the Truce in July 1921, during which time he took part in all activities and engagements that took place in the Westport area. Keane joined the Civic Guard Force on 23 March 1922 and was appointed as Superintendent on 1 May 1922. Keane subsequently joined the National Army (July 1922) and was a member of a party of troops sent to release 80 National Troops that had been captured at Tubbercurry, County Sligo and who were being held at Rossmoney Coastguard Station, Westport, County Mayo. Following his discharge from the National Forces Keane re-joined an Garda Síochána where he was placed in charge of Cavan-Monaghan Division until he was discharged on 10 January 1924 as medically unfit.
