During the War of Independence McCormack states that he took part in raids for arms, took part in IRA attacks on Ballymore and Streamstown RIC barracks and the burning of Moyvore RIC Barracks as well as an ambush of British forces at Auburn. On 14 May 1921 McCormack was captured by British forces and interned until December 1921.
On his release Michael McCormack re-joined the IRA and following the outbreak of the Civil War took part in fighting against National Army forces at Ballymote Army Barracks. He claims to have assisted the local IRA Active Service Unit and took part in the preparations for an attack on National Army forces at Tang.
