Subject Information File relates to Michael McHugh's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. Michael McHugh claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from its inception. He claims to have mobilised for the 1916 Easter Rising but had no active service. He was subsequently arrested and detained by the British authorities for about 3 weeks in May/June of that year. From late 1916 onwards he took part in the reorganisation of the Irish Volunteers in County Mayo and claims to have served as Vice Brigade Officer Commanding of the Mayo Brigade Irish Volunteers and later to have held the same position with the West Mayo Brigade IRA. He also claims to have been selected to act as a substitute for Richard Walsh, a Mayo representative on the National Executive Council of the Irish Volunteers. During the War of Independence Michael McHugh took part in Irish Volunteer and IRA raids for arms, burning of RIC barracks and raids on income tax offices. In November 1920 McHugh was arrested/captured and interned until December 1921. During 1922 Michael McHugh joined the National Army and served throughout the subsequent Civil War. Michael McHugh continued to serve with the Defence Forces until his retirement on 1 October 1946 at the rank of Commandant. File includes: material relating to Michael McHugh's National Army and Defence Forces service record; signed handwritten statements regarding subject's service from Lieutenant General Peadar MacMathghamhna, Anthony MacBride and Joseph MacBride TD; handwritten notes [of evidence given by Michael McHugh before the Board of Assessors, Military Service Pensions Act, 1924]; and material relating to Michael McHugh's widow and son.
