Subject Information File relates to Eugene Monaghan's application for compensation as an ex-member of the Connaught Rangers who participated in the mutiny in India in 1920. File contains material relating to the applicant's British Army Service and details of court martial findings. Enlisted in September 1919. He claims to have taken part in the mutiny but was not court-martialled. Applicant mentions he served for 12 years in the Free State Army (joined in 1922) and was discharged without reason. A letter from the Department of Defence indicates that forms were issued to the applicant on 13 November 1936, 17 August 1936 and again in December 1937. Applicant states those were filled in and duly returned. File contains letters from claimant's father (Patrick Monaghan) and letter of representation from Henry Kenny, TD, (dated 2 November 1970) regarding available pension scheme for Eugene Monaghan; original typed Battalion Orders (107) by Lieutenant-Colonel H.R.G.Deacon, D.S.O, Commanding 1 Battalion The Connaught Rangers at Jullundur [Janlandhar] , dated 31 May 1920. Also contains a farewell letter with a pre-printed signature of King George V, addressed to 'The Officers, Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Connaught Rangers'. Correspondence indicates that no form was received by the Department of Defence in order to process Monaghan's application.
