Subject Information File relates to Seamus Reader's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the various periods between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923. Seamus Reader claims membership of Fianna Éireann from 1911 and to have joined the Irish Volunteers and IRB in late 1913/early 1914. During 1915 and early 1916 he claims to have taken part in a number of Irish Volunteer raids for arms and munitions in Scotland. In January 1916 he was arrested in Glasgow having returned from Dublin with despatches from Sean MacDermott for Irish Volunteer and IRB leaders there. He was subsequently imprisoned and interned until December 1916. Following his release he resumed his activities assisting in the reorganisation of the Irish Volunteers and Fianna Éireann in Scotland as well as assisting in the acquisition and transportation of arms and munitions from Scotland to Ireland for the Irish Volunteers and IRA - he also claims to have been involved in the importation of arms from Germany during this and later periods. During the War of Independence he also acted as an IRA Brigade Commanding Officer. During the Truce period Seamus Reader claims to have acted as Scottish representative at various IRA meetings and conventions. At the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 he took part in fighting in Dublin against National Army forces and escaped to Scotland. Seamus Reader again served as an IRA Brigade Officer Commanding and was involved in the acquisition and transportation of arms for the IRA as well as attempting to prevent National Army recruiting in Scotland. Arrested in Glasgow by Scottish police on 11 January 1923 he was released shortly thereafter - exact date not on file - and claims that an attempt was made to kill him in February 1923 in Glasgow Green. During 1922 and 1923 he was also involved in the preparations for a planned rescue of IRA prisoners from Peterhead Prison in Scotland. He also claims to have been involved in attempts to manufacture tear gas, poison gas and smoke gas for military purposes - no dates for this activity on file. File includes: 2 page typed partial document with handwritten notes regarding subject's service/activities during 1922 and 1923; standard form Referee R.15 recording details of claimant's rank and unit strength from records supplied by IRA Scottish Brigade Committee; typed transcript (13 pages) of sworn statement made by Seamus Reader on 5 May 1936 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten document (2 pages) dated 27 October [1922] with one page handwritten letter from "Tom" addressed to "Dear Tom" with initialled handwritten note - allegedly written in invisible ink - from [McP] regarding raid carried out by CID, advising recipient to change his home address and querying whether recipient wants to go ahead with 'job' in the light of CID capturing documents; original signed handwritten and copy typed statements/letters regarding subject's service and pension application from Dan Breen TD, Senator Seamus Robinson, Joseph O' Doherty, Thomas Elliott, Joseph Robinson and Cormac Turner; typed transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by P.
