Subject Information File relates to John Shaw's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the Irish Volunteers, IRA and National Forces for part or all of the periods between 1 April 1919 and 31 March 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1919. John Shaw claims membership of the Irish Volunteers from 1913. On 15 March 1916 John Shaw was sentenced to six months hard labour having been arrested for buying arms from a British Army soldier. He was released in August of that year. During the War of Independence Shaw took part in the IRA raid for ammunition on the stores of the British and Irish Steam Packet Company in [February] 1920. He was arrested but released in April following a hunger strike. He also took part in the attempted rescue of Robert Barton at Berkely Street, Dublin later that year. He also claims to have assisted in the transportation of weaponry from Dublin to the west of Ireland. Rearrested in [October] 1920 he was sentenced to two years hard labour by a British Army court martial and released from Hull Prison, England in January 1922. Following the outbreak of the Civil War on 28 June 1922 John Shaw served with the National Forces in fighting against anti-Treaty IRA forces at the Four Courts and in the O' Connell Street, Talbot Street and Amiens street areas of Dublin. He did not formally join the National Army and states that his service ceased on 15 July 1922.
