File relates to Edward Murray's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920.
Edward Murray claimed that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917. Subject and/or references claimed that between then and the end of the War of Independence he took part in: anti-Conscription activity; raids for arms; the construction of an arms dump; despatch work; attempted hold up of RIC on Westport Road; the seizure of petrol; ambushes at Kilmeena and Skirdagh; the going to the relief of Thomas Maguire's column (active service unit) in South Mayo Brigade, IRA; the mobilisation for operations which did not come off.
During the Truce period Edward Murray took part in IRA training camps, took the anti-Treaty side at the split, and served in IRA garrisons in Newport and Castlebar and was also sent to Dromore West.
Subject and/or references claimed that during the Civil War he took part in the capture of two National Army officers on the Westport Road, and [took part in engagements] at Newport, Glenhest, Shramore, Castlebar and Brockagh, where he was arrested on 1 November 1922. He was interned until December 1923.
