File relates to John Kelly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 June 1922 during the War of Independence and Truce period. Subject also claimed unsuccessfully for service in all other periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923.
John Kelly claimed that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917. He claimed that between then and the end of the War of Independence he: assisted three deserters from the British Army; did despatch work; did guard duty and catered for IRA officers and men who stayed at his home; blocked and trenched roads and destroyed bridges; assisted in the cleaning and transporting of arms; took part in an attack in Newport, did outpost duty for the Kilmeena ambush and assisted in the removal from the scene and bringing to safety of two wounded IRA members. He also claimed that his home was raided by 'Black and Tans' (RIC) and that he was badly beaten and shot at by them as well.
John Kelly claimed that he was Company Officer Commanding during the Civil War, blocked roads and destroyed bridges, did despatch work, did guard duty for men on the run in his area, and was present during an exchange of fire with National Army troops but did not fire himself - claimed that Patrick Mulchrone (DP6228) was killed in this incident. He was on the run and was not captured.
