Subject Information File relates to Thomas Lynch’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. File also relates to subject's unsuccessful applications for a special allowance under the Army Pensions Acts - rejected due to excess means. Thomas Lynch claimed that he joined the Irish Volunteers in April 1917. Subject and/or references stated that between then and the end of the War of Independence he: did organisational work, election work and Dáil/Republican court work; took part in the attack on, capture and burning of Ballyvary RIC Barracks; cut railway lines and communications links, blocked and trenched roads for the Kilmeena and Carrowkennedy ambushes – unclear if he took part in the actual fighting. During the Truce period Thomas Lynch took part in IRA training camps and served in Castlebar Barracks. He took the pro-Treaty side at the time of the split in early 1922 and attended a convention held in Galway in April 1922 for the organisation of the pro-Treaty forces in the 4 Western Division area. He then undertook recruiting work for the National Army and Gárda Síochána for which he was arrested and imprisoned by ‘Irregulars’ (anti-Treaty IRA forces) in June 1922. He was detained until the arrival of National Forces in the area in July 1922, following the outbreak of the Civil War. Thomas Lynch served throughout the remainder of the Civil War and was demobilised on 7 March 1924 while serving at the rank of Captain. He joined the Gárda Síochána on 20 March 1925 and resigned from that force on 18 January 1929.
