John McGreal claimed that he was a member of Sinn Féin and the Irish Volunteers in Westport, County Mayo in 1918 and 1919 before immigrating to Scotland for work. He did not claim for any service while in Scotland. Subject does not state when he returned to Ireland. He joined the National Army on 13 June 1922 and served throughout the Civil War. He was wounded accidentally by fellow National Army soldier Peter Jennings on 3 March 1923 while serving at Westport. Following hospitalisation and recovery he continued to serve with the National Army until discharged time expired on 11 August 1923.
