File relates to Patrick Gibbons’ receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 01 April 1920 and 31 March 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. He unsuccessfully applied for service in the periods between 01 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. Gibbons was awarded 2 and 1/9 years’ service for pension purposes at Grade D in 1942 under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934.
Patrick Gibbons states that he joined Castlebar Company in April 1916 under the command of John Hoban. He was appointed Company Captain in March 1917 of D Company (Glenisland), 1 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Irish Volunteers. Subject states that he took part in drilling; training; signalling and engineering classes; police duty at Sinn Féin Courts and election work (1918). During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921), the subject claims that he served under the command of James Chambers (MSP34REF2993) and was engaged in burning Glenisland Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks (April 1920); arms raids; preventing people from British courts; arms raids; rifle practice; in charge of battalion arms; constructing arms dumps; blocking roads between Castlebar and Newport; destruction of bridges and lying in ambush position at Glenisland (early 1921). He further states that Michael Mangan (Intelligence Officer) asked him to organise a communication line from Castlebar Railway Station to Glenhest with safe houses along the way.
During the Truce period, Patrick Gibbons claims that he attended an officers’ training camp at Ballycroy (one week); constructing company dugout and did garrison duty in Castlebar and Westport Barracks.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, the applicant claims that he helped to trench roads between Castlebar and Newport; trench road beside Glenisland Barracks; working for Active Service Unit (ASU) under Eamon Moane (MSP34REF50); blocking roads; destruction of bridges; taking wounded IRA officer Mark Killilea (MSP34REF12183) to Castlebar Hospital; safely bringing IRA men to Skerdagh who had been wounded at Kilmeena ambush.
