File relates to Thomas Ainsworth’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920.
Subject claimed that he was a member of Na Fianna Éireann at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising and that he did despatch work at that time.
Thomas Ainsworth stated that during the War of Independence he: took part in raids for arms; served as Company First Lieutenant and with an active service unit; took part in the burning of the evacuated Westport RIC Barracks; and took part in ambushes/engagements with British forces at Clogher Cross, Kilmeena, Skirdagh and Carrowkennedy.
Subject and references stated that Thomas Ainsworth was promoted to the Battalion staff as the Officer in Charge of Training during the Truce period. Subject took the anti-Treaty side and claimed that he was sent to Limerick during the standoff there in early 1922. During the Civil War he stated that he took part in fighting against National Army forces at Westport and Clifden. He was arrested shortly before the ceasefire in 1923 – exact date not on file – and released in 1924. Further details regarding his internment not on file.
