File relates to Patrick Ansbro's unsuccessful application for a military service pension in respect of his claimed service with the Irish Volunteers, the IRA and the National Forces. The Board of Assessors recognised service between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923.
Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917. Claimed that he was a member of Balcarra Company, 4 Battalion, South Mayo Brigade and the Active Service Unit (Flying Column), South Mayo Brigade under the command of Thomas Maguire. Says that he collected arms; blocked roads and cut communications. Claims that in the Truce period he attended a training camp. Says that he was arrested by members of the anti-Treaty IRA and was detained in custody until the National Forces released him.
States that he enlisted in the National Forces on 12 October 1922 in Castlebar, County Mayo and that he was discharged/demobilised on 11 April 1924 at the rank of Private. Noted in reference from that KC Sheridan Ansbro was attacked in his home on account of being a member of the National Army.
