Subject Information |
File relates to unsuccessful application by Thomas Callaghan for compensation under the Army Pensions Act, 1932 in respect of his son James Joseph Callaghan who died in Manchester in 1929. He was informed in 1940 that the deceased “did not receive a wound or injury while engaged in military service” and there is “no evidence that the diseased contracted any disease during his military service”. The Military Service Registration Board recognised service within the meaning of Part II of the Army Pensions Act, 1932 between 1917 and 1923 for subject’s membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA.
It is stated on file that James Joseph (Jim) Callaghan joined [Breaffy] Company, 1 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Irish Volunteers in 1917. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), he served under the command of David Lavelle (Company Captain), James Chambers (MSP34REF2993) (Battalion Commandant) and Edward Moane (MSP34REF50) (Brigade Commandant).
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, James Joseph Callaghan was captured by National forces on 03 November 1922. He took part in 12 day hunger strike in Tintown camp, the Curragh, County Kildare in April 1923 and was released on 18 December 1923. Applicant states that his son moved to Manchester, England in late 1928 and died there three weeks later of issues relating to his stomach. He was buried in Moston Cemetery. Applicant states that a second son was killed in Manchester with three others in a gas accident in a sewer on an unknown date.
Reference David Lavelle states that the subject’s name was on the local Roll of Honour and read out at each Easter commemoration in Castlebar, County Mayo.
File includes application form; funeral expenses receipt from R Ellis, 23 Travis Street, London road, Manchester (1929) and handwritten letter from applicant to P Ruttledge TD, Minister for Defence (1929). File 2RB4012 contains filled out reference forms from David Lavelle (1939).
